Mission
Griffin School is a college preparatory high school community defined by academic rigor and creativity. Our mission is to cultivate individual potential and intellectual curiosity within a vibrant and engaged community.

Griffin School, founded in 1996, serves grades 9-12. Total enrollment is 157. The senior class of 2023 includes 35 students. The school draws from 42 zip codes in the Central Texas area, and six countries. The faculty and administration include 25 full-time and 18 part-time teachers, of whom 16 hold advanced degrees. The student-teacher ratio is 7:1 and the average class size is 12. Classes are capped at 15.

Accreditation
Griffin School is accredited by the Texas Alliance of Accredited Private Schools, under the auspices of the Texas Private School Accreditation Commission.

Academic Program and Diploma Requirements
The Griffin School graduation plan includes a classical liberal arts program of study: four courses each in Mathematics, Social Science, English, and Science, two credits of foreign language, unique elective opportunities, community service, and an optional senior honors project. The school offers AP and honors courses across all disciplines. It is important to note that the “on level” courses are designed to maintain college preparatory academic standards for all students. In small, interactive classrooms, Griffin School students are expected to be actively engaged in meaningful learning.

Griffin School emphasizes personal achievement and it is our general policy to not rank our students.

National Merit Recognition, Class of 2022
Four students were recognized as Commended Students in the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program.
One student was recognized as a National Hispanic Scholar.

2022 Regional Scholastic Art & Writing Awards
Griffin students won 11 Regional Scholastic Art awards, including one Gold Key, four Silver Keys, and six Honorable Mentions. In the Writing competition, Griffin students won nine awards, including one Gold Key in Poetry, one Gold in Short Story, three Honorable Mentionsin Poetry, three Honorable Mentions in Short Story, and one Honorable Mention in Flash Fiction.

AP Scholars
In May 2022, a total of 16 students were recognized by the College Board as AP Scholars, including 3 AP Scholars with Honor and 8 AP Scholars with Distinction.

Community Service Requirement
Griffin students complete 20 hours of volunteer service per year, resulting in a total of 80 hours by their graduation date.

Grades transferred from other schools are calculated in the Griffin School GPA.

Special Programming

Electives and workshops: Students choose electives and workshops in a host of areas, including 2D arts, 3D arts, music, photography, radio, video, game design, sculpture, creative writing, rock band, and more.

Skills: All students are enrolled in a weekly skills workshop. Skills topics include: study skills, restorative practices, health, civil discourse, diversity, equity and inclusion, and the college process.

Senior Thesis Project: Students have the option to participate in a senior thesis project that has both a broad scope and personal significance to the student. Student projects must include the following components: research, writing, multimedia/product, and presentation.

Cultural Values
We are committed to a diverse and inclusive school community, and we foster and maintain a culture in which each person is accepted, valued, and respected for their individuality. Griffin students learn and live communitarian values: We emphasize social responsibility and engage all students in school governance, whole school activities, and service both to the school community and to the larger community of Austin.

Athletics
In 2021-22, Griffin School competed as a 3A school in the TAPPS league in coed soccer, cross-country, women’s volleyball, basketball, and track and field. The Griffin Boys XC team placed 2nd in the State. Before moving to this league in 2021, Griffin competed in the TAIAO league. In 2021, Griffin Boys Track and Field won the TAIAO State Track and Field Championship. In 2018 and 2019, Griffin Boys Cross-Country won the TAIAO State Cross Country Championship. All students at Griffin are expected to participate in a PE course, which include options such as Aerobics, Basketball, Cross-Country, CrossFit, Pilates, Rock Climbing, Track and Field, Soccer, Volleyball, Warrior Arts, and Yoga.
