Description: Masks can hide but masks can also reveal and transform. For thousands of years humans have been using masks in rituals and ceremonies of all different kinds. In nearly every culture there are masks, some simple and others amazingly ornate. Humans use masks to tell stories and through the mask we become part of a larger world, part material, part spirit. In this class we will study masks of the world to learn about their cultural significance and social functions. We will create our own individual masks that will reveal our own sense of place, personality, and purpose.
